Lovely Produce

Lovely Produce

Hello Everyone,

Bob and I hope you are all very well.

The rain we have had this last week has been just what the gardener ordered. It has been rain which has bounced onto the land with some force. The ground has been really dry for many a week which causes a near crust on top of the land, preventing the ground to soak up the water. ‘Run-off’ results, i.e. water drains away following the gradient and does not wet under the surface where the roots of growing plants are. To establish a growing plant we first must care for the root system. The roots extract the nutrients from the world web of the soil, a good uptake through the roots clearly creates a healthy and productive crop.

This time of the year, growers delight and find great joy in the goodies they produce and here on Freyja Farm, we are no exception.

The Farm

The amount of produce we have available to harvest is amazing, even if I do say so myself. This year has seen ideal weather conditions and with a combination of planning and hard work, our produce has been abundant, tasty and on schedule.

The planning happened back in December for the whole of the year. It is paying off. We plan every year carefully, we have one shot for each growing season. If we do not sow the seeds at the right time, then transplanting will not be at the optimum time, allowing the plant to grow in the conditions the individual plant requires. We have made mistakes in the past where we transplanted later than we should have, thinking that it’s ok, the plant will survive. Yes, the plant may have survived, however, no vegetable was produced. A season of growing just wasted.

This year we have made a concerted effort to follow the plan and alongside Mother Nature providing the heat, light and now water the food we are growing is amazing. The first of the new Spring Season vegetables to be cropped is always the Broad Bean. Since then the kitchen has been cooking with Chard, Kohlrabi, Lettuce, Spring Onions, Potatoes, Salad Onions, Garlic, Peas, Kale, Cavolo Nero, Carrots, Beetroot, Radish, French Beans, Fennel, Leaks and Cabbages. We have harvested Strawberries and Rhubarb, lots of flavoursome Herbs and colourful Flowers. We are soon going to continue with Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Aubergines, Peppers, Runner Beans, Sugar Snap Peas, Courgettes, Sweetcorn, Celery along with more soft fruits. I did say ‘abundant’. Pictures of all our produce can be seen on Instagram.

We will, in the very, very near future, be supplying boxes of these delicious goodies for people to purchase. Keep watching and reading as it maybe sooner than you realise. Firm information will be provided soon.

The Walled Garden

Tomorrow will see the start of an exciting two weeks…the Greenhouse will, at long last, begin to be constructed. This means that, next week, I will literally have some constructive information. (This is as long as there are no major issues with anything or anyone, fingers crossed).

Our assorted soft fruit bushes are beginning to produce a small amount of berries and currants. This is good to see even though we do not expect any bushes to produce in abundance on this, their first year.

The YouTube Channel

Over this year, Ben and Glen have been recording progress within the Freyja Project. You are now able to watch snippets from the Farm and the Walled Garden. This also includes people who are involved in the project or garden, producing the Organic Produce. The media side is very new to us on the project and we are being guided by the lovely media people. They have suggested great ideas for the coming weeks and months. Once again, watch this space. Enjoy this weeks episode….which is a summary of our year so far (going live on Sunday afternoon).

Till next week with more exciting news,

Take care,

Ann
